Accounting vs. Finance: Understanding the Differences

Though accounting and finance are two different disciplines, many students, job seekers, and even employers are not fully aware of the differences between the two fields. Whether you are looking to employ a finance manager or an accountant, choosing a career, or selecting an educational program, it is essential to know how accounting and finance are distinct from each other. Keep reading to learn what distinguishes these two fields.

           Points of Differences

There are various ways of differentiating between accounting and finance. Apart from differences in meaning, they don’t have the same course contents. The job specifications of accountants are also different from the job definition of finance officers or managers. Given the difference in tasks handled, people in these fields don’t receive the equal salaries, even from the same organization.

           Difference in Meaning

Accounting, as a discipline, is a study of the art of recording and reporting the financials of an organization or business entity, including all receipts related to particular purpose or period. An account ledger contains all the income of a company and also shows how these revenues are expended and for what reasons. Students of accounting learn various accounting standards for keeping records and track of financial statements.

Finance, on the other hand, teaches the student how to manage the fund or finance of a business entity efficiently to maximize profit and reduce costs. The course also studies money, its acquisition, and time value. Finance as a field of studies covers accounting. Put differently; accounting is a child of finance while finance is the mother of accounting.

Difference in Job Titles and Specifications

Job titles in the accounting department of business include auditors, bookkeepers, accounts payable clerks, financial reporting accountant, accounts receivable clerks, tax accountants, treasurers, controllers and others. All the employees in accounting departments are under the control of the chief financial officer of the business because they report to him or her. Job titles in the financial department of a company include financial purchasing manager, financial manager, financial analyst, investment bankers, personal financial advisor, financial examiner, money manager and others.

           Places of Work

Both accountants and financial professionals can work for the same business but in different departments. An accountant will work in the accounting department of a business such banks, government agencies, business entities and others. Similarly, a finance officer can work in accounting department of the same business including corporate or consulting finance business, insurance companies, bank and others.

           Difference in Salaries

The salary ranges in both fields are not the same. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics’ projection, there are fantastic prospects in both areas now and in the future. The BLS also projected the increase in job opportunities for finance professionals and accountants between now and 2024. In general, the salary ranges of people in the finance departments of businesses are higher than those of people in accounting departments.

Accounting and finance are related in a number of ways. In the first instance, they are all part of economics. Accounting forms part of finance and finance depends on accounting to a considerable extent. It could be said that account ends where finance begins. Some of the courses studies in accounting are also studied in finance.

Both accounting and finance have good future prospects. With expertise in either of the two, your chances of getting a rewarding job are high. However, it is important to understand the differences between the two so that you apply for a position that fits your area of specialization.
Looking to Hire a Staffing Agency? Here is a Must-Read!

An increasing number of businesses are turning to staffing agencies to fulfill their human capital acquisition and management needs. Staffing agencies have sophisticated recruitment and selection processes to source high-quality talent, precisely aligned with client requirements. Finding a staffing agency that can deliver on your prerequisites, however, can be difficult as finding high-quality talent. To help, in this blog post, we list some of the key factors you need to consider when hiring a staffing agency.

           Types of Positions Filled

A business must outline its staffing needs before turning to an agency to find the right talent. Here are the most common employment models agencies work on:

            Temporary Hire

             – A staffing agency finds candidates who work on temporary projects and have a pre-defined employment tenure. These employees will remain on the payroll of the staffing company but work for the client.

            Direct Hire

             – A staffing company acts as a recruiter in the scenario of direct hire and the candidate hired will be on the payroll of the client.

            Temp-to-Hire

             – A staffing company will sign a contract with the employee, and the client has the option to hire the candidate as a permanent employee on its payroll once the contact tenure ends.

           Industry Expertise

The industry expertise of a staffing agency plays a key role in determining the type of talent it can source. Look for an agency with prior experience in hiring for clients from your industry, who could be your direct competitors or larger players in the segment. It is, however, worth mentioning that some agencies specialize in hiring for multiple industries.

           Screening Methods

Businesses turn to a staffing agency with the expectation of getting the best of talent from the industry. It is, therefore, imperative that you ask about screening methods of the company and if they are willing to customize the process as per their client’s requirement. Ask about the background and reference check process the recruitment team in the agency follows, when shortlisting candidates.

           Qualification of Recruiters

Another factor to consider when hiring a staffing agency is the qualification of its recruiters. The qualifications of the team members would give you a fair idea of how adept they would be at understanding and fulfilling your human capital needs. Look for a recruitment team that is aware of the latest HR trends in your industry and has relevant hiring experience.

           Summing Up

Hiring a staffing company takes away the stress of screening candidates and allows you to focus on other core functions of your business.
5 Ways to Stand Out in Your Next Job Interview

The job interview is the first in-person interaction between you and the recruiter. During this encounter, your interviewer evaluates your skills and qualifications to ensure you are the right fit for the role. To assess your overall personality and attitude, the interviewer also evaluates the way you carry yourself. To stand out amongst the rest, you need to convince the interviewer that you have the upper hand on other applicants. To help achieve this objective, this post lists some effective interview tips. Read on.

           1. Minimize Nervous Habits and Behaviors

Nervous habits and behaviors send a negative vibe to the interviewer, which often impact your chances of landing the opportunity. It is important to control your nervous habits. For example, if you have a habit of shaking your knees, you should try sitting cross-legged. Similarly, if you have a habit of tapping a pen or any other object on the desk try to avoid holding anything in your hands during the interview.

           2. Make an Impression in the First 30 Seconds

According to a psychological report, interviewers form an opinion about candidates within the first 30 seconds of their interaction. To make an impression, be poised while walking from the waiting area to the interviewer’s office. Avoid carrying unnecessary props that give a cluttered look. When talking to the interviewer, speak in a slow, confident and clear tone.

           3. Answer Questions in a Story Format

Interviews are becoming increasingly interactive, and interviewers want the ability to look beyond your resume as it will them help learn more about your personality traits and skills. To create a lasting impression on your interviewer, weave stories around your accomplishments. If you suggested a new process that helped your last organization save labor costs, use an intriguing opening line such as, “Let me talk about an incident when I helped my employer steady the business ship.” Follow this strategy to answer other questions too.

           4. Answer Difficult Questions Tactfully

A long hiatus from work, a short stay at a recent job, or any other inconsistencies are often considered as blemishes on a job applicant’s history. If you have a less than perfect resume you must remember that difficult questions will come up at some point during the interview. For this reason, you must be prepared to answer them tactfully. You must also prepare different lines of answers to handle such questions. For instance, if you do not have a degree which would have been helpful, try emphasizing how your work experience provided you with the required experience and molded you into the professional you are today.

           5. Follow-up when the Interview Concludes

Job interviews are a two-way process. As much as the interviewer wants to ask questions, they would like you to come up with questions for them. To express interest and project yourself as a pro-active candidate, ask meaningful questions related to job responsibilities and how the position has evolved over the years. To assess the organization’s culture and environment, ask the interviewer about their experience working with the employer. Ask if the interviewer wants you to supply any additional info. Prior to leaving the room thank the interviewer (or the panel) with a smile.

           Ready to Shine?

The job market has evolved over the years, and interviewers now assess the overall personality of applicants when deciding on who fits the bill. Following these tips will help you get one step closer to your dream job. To better your prospects, you should seek the services of a recruitment agency that can help with relevant job openings.
Confused Between Multiple Job Offers? Here’s how to Choose

Life is strange. Sometimes you have to search hard to get one decent interview opportunity, and then there are times when you are flooded with more than a few lucrative options. Choosing between multiple job offers is not an easy task, as different propositions have different pros and cons. If you are confused between two or more job offers, here are some simple tips to help narrow down your options.

           Prioritize Deciding Factors

You need to consider various factors before accepting a job offer. Make a list of all the factors ruling the decision, such as salary, hierarchy, growth opportunities, commission structure, type of work, company culture, bonuses, medical coverage, the frequency of travel, and other factors you deem necessary. Once you have the list, prioritize the items starting from the most important factor to the least important one.

           Consider the Work Environment

Company’s work culture has a significant impact on your performance and long-term job satisfaction. When choosing among multiple job offers, consider the work environment to decide whether you will be a good fit. Remember, earning a fat paycheck may not matter if you are unhappy with your employer’s culture. You can get a fair idea about a company’s work culture by checking its social media outlets, like Glassdoor.

           Look Beyond Perks

In today’s competitive world, it goes without saying that companies are going all out to attract top talent, with one of the magnets being great perks. Almost every leading employer offers health insurance, rec rooms, gym facilities, and several other benefits to employees. As these perks look quite attractive, it is easy to get swayed and ignore other essential aspects of the job.

           Growth Opportunities

Imagine a job that offers a fantastic salary and allows you to fulfill all your materialistic ambitions, whereas another job offer doesn’t offer as much salary, but promises better learning opportunities. Which one would you choose? Making good money is something most people desire, but even all the money in the world may not pacify our soul if we are asked to continue to do the same job year after year. If you are ambitious for growth, don’t shy away from asking your hiring manager about the opportunities you’d have in your role.

Prior to accepting a job offer, read the reviews received by the prospective employer from its current and ex-employees. Reading first-hand experiences will help you get an overview of the company’s work environment and employee-satisfaction. If an employer has provided a deadline to accept the offer and you are yet to make up your mind, you can request some more time. If you are still unsure of the choice, feel free to consult a recruitment expert at Delta Dallas. To learn about how we can help, fill out our contact form or simply call
